3 Key Exercises For Double Bass Drumming - Drum Lesson
Thanks for your work! 60bpm makes consistency for me, finally! :))
Glad to hear that and thank you :)
Love your content and all that you provide! I have feedback for anyone interested: For lower legs, I highly recommend avoiding lifting your toes with your heels planted, because it trains you to move the pedal using your shin muscles as the motor force, which have much less musclar potential than your calves. You can achieve the same exact end result pedal motion by only dynamically activating your calf muscles. To train your legs to use calves as the motor force instead, practice on the floor, keeping your toes planted on the floor and striking the ground with your heel. Focus on flexing your calves and not lifting from the hip. This eliminates the shins from the equation and ensures you learn how to use the most powerful muscle in the lower leg to perform fast double bass. Cheers!
Oh yes the calves are great and I also do that training(included in my double bass routine) though because of the way I stay very close to the base of the pedal, I end up using quite a lot of shin muscles anyway and I've found that the heel down practice gives me more control and speed than the calf exercises over a period of training. So I do more of the shin and thigh now. And will continue to do that. However the calf is a strong muscle for sure and can be used to great speed and stamina! Cheers for that important input.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ How interesting! I find that my shins play a definite stabilizing role in my technique. I can see that for you they play a more active role. In my journey, focusing on calves is what gave me the biggest double bass boost, and it's interesting to see others get good results with slightly different approaches. I definitely sit a bit farther from my pedals than you, but perhaps I'll include some shin work in the near future!
I'm also experimenting with a raised ankle exercise. Suspending it off the floor and doing those taps. That should in theory get both shin and calves in one motion haha and I'm finding that I'm weak at that but willing to train it to see how it effects drumming :) cheers man!
Stop playing games !!!! Just play your ass off
Good exercises. I always loved how I can practice drums literally anywhere.
Rock on!
I can try for ages and fail. Blessed are you who succeed. I do not know how to do.
Follow this routine 4x a week. Get back to me after a month :)
I can try for ages and fail. Blessed are you who succeed. I do not know how to do.
Teachers hated me for this but... I know it should be a bit louder
😂 probably a good idea to still respect the space you are sharing.
Hello, Thank you for your amazing top quality educational drumming videos. I have been struggling for many years with my double kick speed. Only now i've realised my technique is totally wrong and i've not been using ankle technique to break that 150bpm+ barrier. My left foot which is my weaker side, is so much more elevated in the heel up position on the pedal compared to my right which is a lot more flat footed, i've tried many different seat heights and distance, it doesn't really change. i think that may just be my natural comfortable position. The absolute HARDEST barrier for me to break through is CONTROLLING various speeds (130bpm+) using ankle technique with single stroke 8th notes, just like you explained in the video. Can be bloody demoralising. so frustating!! i will keep on practising, i've neglected this for YEARS. NO MORE! Thanks again mate.
Oh hey this is an old video though so I suggest also checking out my latest double bass routines. Just go to my channel and search double bass routine. There are 2. Involves a lot of what I'm saying in this video but also a few additional very important exercises. Those should get you on the right track with your practice for now. Thanks for the heartfelt comment and sharing your struggles. I hope you'll finally see some solid progress in the last half of 2024
7/3/24 Current level: Stage 8. This is still hard and my arms rly feel the burn. First time doing endurance at higher tempos
7/3/24 current level: Stage 10. Stage 11 I could do but not cleanly. Stage 12 nearly impossible to stay on tempo for singles
Try adding the muscle workouts to your every day routine. These make sure your muscles themselves are strong and you're less reliant on rebound and technique ruclips.net/user/shorts74KnloamNrY?si=VJqkjW0hH1gXZCQd keep up the effort!!
Nice, something to do while I'm at school😂
😂 very good thing to do 😀
Great methods. Thank you so much. I will definitely be doing this
Hope it helps!
NICE. This is actually really helpful, especially for beginner training/skill buiilding early. Ok, now can you do some videos on building up to complex rhythms with different limbs? (Legit request.)
I already have tons of those here , check them out :) ruclips.net/video/q8vI6-NX0ek/видео.htmlsi=h7T95f9FH2W3nyjX

Awesome as ever! I have started to incorporate the hand work into my routine.
Great to hear! and thanks :)

Thanks man appreciate your uploads!!!! I’ve been doing the ultimate double bass exercise 2.0 and I’ll be adding this too😄 Which I will say your lesson has helped me so much!!!
Thank you :) how's it been going with the routine?

Got it!
Thank you brother! This topic is difficult to find being discussed... also stretching... very important for health.
Yes fit and healthy body = bigger potential on the drums
Why is there a pillow in the bass drum?
To take away most of the resonance. It will sound too boomy if there wasn't any muffling
Very useful, cheers
Glad to hear! Cheers
Great song in 2x

Right on!
I can do this
Subscribed, love drummers all over the world❤❤
Cheers and thanks!
I finally found the difference between tight and loose springs thank you!
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much dude, i couldn't keep a steady tempo with double pedals to save my life. A couple of days of practice and now i have noticed the difference. Im already so much better
That's awesome. You owe it to yourself for doing this routine consistently the past few days :) I've got a 2nd double bass routine you can also try ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.htmlsi=jHx0ab13PUezKsLs although you can just stick to this for the next month. Or alternate between them when you get bored of the other one. Changing up the routine now and then helps re-stimulate the muscles. Also routine 2.0 is more focused on muscle development which is very essential for the higher speeds.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Thanks! Also I've been wanting to ask a question. If I train legs (weight lifting) should I make my routine less intense?
The more you train, the more workload your muscles can take. So if you've been doing that for awhile, you actually can keep up the intensity of having both and they're going to help each other. You'd know if after weeks of your current intensity your legs recover to go again and again and there is no pain or injury. I realize I'm able to do more legwork too nowadays on top of teaching 8 hours a day. But 5 years back I couldn't. My legs would totally burn out and I'd experience pain in my ankle joint.
The level 3 warm Up is actually my peak right now 😂
Thanks for the share. Hope you push through to a higher peak soon 💪
LOL 😐👏
I've been trying to do this for almost two months now - I practice nearly every day, and the best I can possibly do is the side to side motion. I cannot for the life of me get the stick to go in a circle motion and it''s soooooo frustrating.
Try to do that side to side motion, then at the same time try rotating your arm and wrist as if you were turning a door knob continuously. Should get you a bit of circular motion. Then practice smoothing it out with how much you rotate the wrist
I have a little problem, for example, in the part of Alternate ankles/shin, my left foot tends to do the exercises faster but in a low tempo, it's difficult to control it at slow tempos, how can I fix this problem?
Try going a lot slower then. It's very normal to have weak shin muscles. My students hate this exercise the most because it burns and is very hard to control. but it gets results once you keep to it. Sometimes they go as slow as 50bpm in the beginning stages

I love you cosplay and cover❤.
Thank you for checking this out and writing a lovely comment :)
c deffinately
You got it :)
I always love ur video! Straight to the point. I need a tip! I have an old 5002 and i can say the sweet spot is there. Btw when i lift my heel to keep the beater as u shown witch muscles i have to use? It looks the proper way to “weight” the leg on the footboard is using only the calf muscle. In this way all the weight of the leg is on the board. The result for my 9kg leg is that i had to buy the higher tension spring cause the standard,at the max cannot support my leg. The pedal is so hard. Can u be more precise in what group of muscle must be involved when u lift ur heel to regulate ur spring? Many thanks!
Oh hey 9kg is twice mine so definitely could have some differences. I just life my heel off the floor. No thigh/hip flexing there. Upper leg is as relaxed as you can let it be. So no extra pressure comes from them
Hey man thanks for this video just wondering lately I’m noticed my left foot which is my week foot can play high tempos with hood conistancy but my main foot carnt and just speed up or is to slow do u have a solution to this issue :)
You can start by testing out the muscle groups. See how fast each foot can play for 1 min non stop using upper/lower leg as per the exercises in the video(but feet separately). Then note the differences and close the gap between them. 2nd check how much weight is needed to move either pedal. Can get a 5kg dumbbell and put it on both pedals at the same spot and see where the beaters go to. On double pedals the shaft complicates the force needed. And also how smooth the swings go. Try to adjust the spring tension first to get the same weighted effort required for both pedals. It's very hard to get them the same feel though. You know when you try to play both the pedals with your stronger foot. Even it can feel the difference. So get that as close as possible (gear is a factor)
I have the exact same problem
I fucked up my knees because I stomped too hard when playing. I think the ankle technique could be my salvation. Thanks for the video, bro ❤️
Injury can reveal such things. I got injured before too from over practicing. All the best to learning the ankle technique
